Today begins a month-long open enrollment period for Colorado kids who don鈥檛 have health coverage under a family policy or program such as Medicaid.
The state Division of Insurance says there are a number of scenarios under which child-only policies are needed, including divorce, loss of employer-based coverage, or health insurance policies that don鈥檛 offer dependent coverage.
Colorado law now mandates that all health insurance carriers offering individual policies in the state also offer child-only policies. And they must be offered without regard to a child鈥檚 health status or preexisting conditions.
The open enrollment period provides some assurance to companies that parents won鈥檛 wait until their children are sick to sign them up. The current period ends August 31st. After that, parents must wait until January first for the next open enrollment period.
